Title EIA’s AVESTA café wins special prize at world-wide Food & Beverage Competition
Content The Avesta Café Franchise at Erbil’s International Airport has won a top award at the world wide Food and Beverage Conference.
The special distinction award was made at the airport food and beverage industry’s annual conference, FAB 2019, held in 2019, in Dallas, Fort Worth, in the USA. Attracting hundreds of entrants in a variety of categories aimed at recognizing excellence in the delivery of food and beverage concepts, Erbil’s Avesta concept scooped an individual award.
In doing so the Avesta franchise became the food and beverage offer in Iraq to win such an award. The judges praised the innovation, determination and drive that saw major investment and development from 2014 onwards at the height of the battle with ISIS and the ensuing economic slump.
EIA hosts six Avesta outlets within the terminal to cater to the needs of the travelling public. The latest offer includes a coffee, bar and food outlet in both wings of the airport focused on serving passengers who have cleared immigration and security and who await boarding for their flights.
Director General of EIA, Talar Faiq said: “Sam Michael and his team at Avesta deserve every credit for this award. To win a special distinction award at the prestigious FAB 2019 industry gathering is tribute to their vision, patience and bravery in making the investment from 2014 onwards.
In the summer of 2014 whilst the airport saw many people leave Erbil, Sam and his team were busy investing and creating food and beverage outlets on a level with international airports around the world. Since then, airport closures, the six month long international blockade and fluctuating fortunes of EIA has seen Avesta remain strong in its commitment to deliver for the travelling public.
EIA and the KRG benefit from Avesta’s success through a revenue sharing contract but the real beneficiaries are the travelling public who can enjoy quality food and drinks.
Many congratulations to the Avesta team for this award.”

Sarah Genest from the FAB organizers said: “ The judges noted the real difficulties and challenges you have faced and overcame. This is a tremendous achievement and a and well-deserved win.”

Sam Michael, CEO of Bitco, owner of the Avesta brand, said: “ I am grateful for the kind words of the Director General and the support from EIA as we have tried to develop the Avesta brand during some challenging times. The award and recognition from the Food and Beverage industry is great news for myself and the staff at Avesta. It is a team effort but it shows that we can bring international standards to this country and maintain them - the award should remind us all that a focus on customer service, quality and high standards can be achieved.
We look forward to bringing more fresh ideas to the Avesta brand in the coming months and years and to delivering the best service possible.”
