Title EIA welcomes Saudia with launch of Jeddah-Erbil Route
Content Today, October 1, 2018 - Erbil International Airport was pleased to welcome the first scheduled flight of Saudia to Erbil.
Initially running three times per week, Saudia is the 21st airline to set up operations to and from Erbil. The launch comes a year after the airport was subject to an international blockade imposed by the Baghdad government after the successful ‘independence referendum’, on September 25, 2017.
The welcome celebration which featured a water arch for the incoming plane and the traditional cake cutting cutting ceremony was held at the airport’s VIP terminal.
The Kurdistan Regional Government was represented by, Minister Sinjari, Ms Nawroz Maulod, acting Minister, Transport and Communications, Erbil Governor, Nawzad Hady, Minister of Planning, Dr Ali Sindi and by Head of Foreign Affairs Department, Mr Falah Mustafa.
Saudia Airlines was represented by His Excellency, Salih Bin Nasir Al- Jasir, General Director, Saudia. Also present was the Saudi Consul General, Mr Mansour Bin Faisal Al- Otaibi.

Welcoming the arrival of Saudia to Erbil, Ms Talar Faiq, EIA Director General said :
“ EIA is delighted that Saudia have chosen to launch this route between Jeddah and Erbil. It is another milestone for the growth and development of the airport and will provide the people of the region with further travel options, particularly those who are going on pilgrimage, but also for the business community.
This launch comes two days after the anniversary of the six month international blockade imposed by Baghdad.
Ms Faiq added that
“I’m pleased to report continued progress in the delivery of projects to develop and maintain the airport despite the blockade. EIA passenger numbers are slowly recovering which reflects on the gradual recovery of the region. “
The Saudia service from Erbil to Jeddah will run three times per week - Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, departing at 10 am.
