Title EIA sees continued growth despite challenging aviation and economic environment
Content EIA continued to see growth in passenger numbers in 2014, showing a near 31% increase year on year to 1,566,000 passengers compared with 1,193,783 in 2013. The increase in passengers is driven by a 62% rise in Iraqi Airways traffic and he continued expansion and success of Zagros Jet.

For the first time since record keeping began in 2006, total cargo tonnage saw a 13% fall. Driven in part by the economic downturn, in part, by the imposition, by the Maliki regime, of a freight ban in June and July, and the suspension of flights by airlines themselves in August, 2014, total cargo was 33,527 tonnes.

Airport Director Talar Faiq said:
"It has been a challenging year for aviation in Iraq. I have always maintained that the performance of the airport reflects what is happening in the economy. In 2014, we saw evidence of a slow down in traffic amongst international travelers, as the security situation and the economy took their toll, but an increase in domestic travel, as Iraqi increased services to Baghdad and other cities in the country to make up for the closure of road links to the South. We saw refugees and others depart in large numbers for points south.
My thanks go to the agencies working at the airport, in particular the security team, for their continued vigilance and to colleagues in immigration and customs for their work. EIA was pleased to welcome back all the airlines who suspended in August and part of September. In January 2015, on average 108 passenger flights departed Erbil International, serving, 23 cities in 14 different countries. ”
